The way people shop has been forever changed by the global pandemic. It has driven 10 years’ worth of behavior change in just 12 months, with online sales accelerating from 19% of all retail sales in 2019, to 28% in 2020 and 35% in the first quarter of 2021.

Even if we assume half of this behavior change reverts to pre-pandemic patterns, that still leaves a cautious forecast of 27% of all 2021 retail sales being online, which from a 2019 base, is equivalent to the amount of behavior change since 2011.

It is an exciting opportunity for the major brands in the auto sector.
